All good things must come to an end... like this post... and root canal...

Okay... I do actually appreciate this movie. I appreciate what it meant to women and to the world to have a female leading superhero headline their own movie. I appreciate that it came out after the dismal critical response to it's predecessor - Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice - and I appreciate there are heaps of elements I loved in here.

For one, Gal Gadot is nearly perfect in the role of Wonder Woman. She was made for this part and did the character justice (sorry... pun not intended... but I'm not changing it either!) She had some amazing scenes and is an amazing athlete herself. I watched some clips of her and the Amazons preparing for their roles. They put the Amazons through a three-month boot camp. I had assumed as the headline actress that maybe Gal didn't have to do it... but I saw a vid of her training and boxing and she might not of needed to do it. She used to train Commandos in the Israeli Army! I did not know this. Wow. The Amazons too were amazing.

So why do these movies never quite do it for me?

I think it comes back to what I've been saying throughout.

There's an over-reliance on CGI at times - sometimes when they don't need it at all, and that pisses me off. Often, the CGI is not remotely close to flawless and that is annoying too.

There is not enough story development. We are forced to rush into these characters' lives and to believe they build a long-lasting love over the space of what seems to be less than a week. Marvel earns their on-screen relationships in a much more organic way. For some reason though, I buy Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter more than I buy Diana Prince and Steve Trevor - Again, I think it comes back to time. Steve Rogers and Peggy fell in love over time - still contained in the space of one movie, but with time gaps that help. They did not meet a week ago or fall in love at once.

The corniness or cheesiness is definitely a factor for me. I cannot get past it, and yet, in Marvel films, I seem to be able to forgive it. Why is that, exactly? Again, I think it's story, time, and context. Now - to be clear - I love comic book movie cheesiness under the right conditions. The DCEU films just don't seem to hit these conditions enough for me.

But, overall, I love and appreciate aspects of this movie. I am on board for superhero films in general, and I will love them regardless of the whole DC/Marvel thing - when they deserve that love. I am truly a fan of both companies and both sets of characters.

This movie is a vast improvement from the last one. I obviously have stacks and stacks of issues with it, but overall we are heading in a better direction... let's see what comes next... after a short brain break...
